Guide on how to play as Black Mage

Here's a guide on how to play the hidden character in Super Smash Flash 2, Black Mage. This will explain the basics as well as the advanced techniques, certain matchups and metagame stuff, etc.

The Basics

So, Black Mage is a character with very unique movesets and metagame. For the most part, he relies a lot on his forward air, his down smash, and his Haste special move. Black Mage is also a lightweight, has poor range, doesn't have a lot of combos besides his down smash combos, his recovery has great range but can easily be punished, his speed is slow with the exception of the forward air move, and his power is pretty good in damage and knockback.

Momentum Canceling Strategies

Black Mage's momentum canceling strategies are a little limited, but he does have a few good options. When Black Mage is sent horizontal and into the air, use the forward air to cancel some of the knockback of the attack (Using Haste will make you SD yourself and you won't get back on to the stage). When sent vertical to a point where it can kill Black Mage, use the Haste move to cancel all of the momentum of the attack and then when you can't do anything in the air, it's safest if you move away from your opponent and grab the ledge.

Comboing

Even though Black Mage has very limited combos, he can do a few good combos to opponents. A very good example would be using the down smash into something else like a grab or an up smash or something. Also using Haste can combo pretty good (Up to 25%). You can also use some land canceling air combos like Nair to up smash or Uair to up smash.

Approaching

When trying to approach with Black Mage, you should use the forward air a lot to approach since it goes faster than his dashing.

Edge Guarding

With Black Mage, you can use some good techniques to edge guard your opponents. You can use the Down Smash on certain characters that go pretty low when frozen and it can send the opponent downward to a certain point depending on the character. You can also use Black Mage's meteors, back air and down air and use his semi spike move, the down tilt. You can also use the Meteor special to kill opponents when recovering.

Defense Strategies

When fighting, you want to be careful of strong KO moves during a lot of %s and don't be so worried about combos since Black Mage is a light weighted character. You want to make some good use of his air dodge and sometimes even his rolls since he travels far and fast with them compared to others.

KO Options

The best KO moves are his forward smash, his up smash, his Haste special, and in certain situations, his Meteor special.

Matchup Advice

When fighting characters that camp a lot like Megaman, you want to use his side tilt a lot since it reflects projectiles. Since Black Mage lacks a lot of combos, you should rely a lot on mindgaming.

You know, I'd love to just say WP:IAR (That's Wikipedian for Ignore all rules) and let him put this on the megaguide, because, although it needs some major tweaking to be considered megaguide quality, it's a good start for one, and two, no one else is doing black mage.
