The Deluxe Thread! Q&A, Advice, General and Social Thread in One! PLEASE POST STUFF HERE INSTEAD OF MAKING NEW THREADS.
To cut down on threads about random tidbits and strategy, I have created this thread for all sorts of discussion. Questions, strategy and even somewhat off-topic threads are allowed here.
The rules:
1)No flaming, trolling (outside of the friendly kind), using swear words or offensive insults.
2)Don't talk about stuff that should belong on MG forums. "Who do you think is in the next demo?" is not a suitable post in this thread.
3)No discussion about stuff completely unrelated to SSF2. Stuff such as football, the news or your daily life is not allowed.
4)No advertising.
5)No spamming.
6)No inappropriate stuff like pornography.
7)Avoid double-posting.
Discuss away!

FALCO AIN'T 1ST!
Good idea Test. We needed a thread like this.
Also, please don't post things like speculation about the next demo. Please don't ask when the next demo will be released or what will be in the demo. Please don't suggest characters, stages, games modes, etc.

I think Viagra(TM) brand enlargement pills will be a character in the next demo, and that he'll be as good as Pele, my favorite footballer of all time.
Knocked out the first five right there so you don't have to.

And number 7.
Don't even try number 6, though.

No offense to people, but the new "aesthetic" looks, look... terrible, especially the smash balls and smoke. It looks like Super Nuke Bros now.

There's a topic in MG for discussing the aesthetics blog post. Such things are not BR related.2)Don't talk about stuff that should belong on MG forums.
Online
It seems to me like forming a tier list would greatly benefit from online multiplayer, especially if videos are posted of the matches. I think this in the same way that tournaments inform tier lists in the smash world.

You are quite correct. Tier lists are formed through detailed analysis of a character's potential and will certainly benefit with more human player vs player matches, which will be possible with the inclusion of online mode. However, based on the information we have now, I can at least tell you that a fully functional online mode wouldn't come soon.

That's unfortunate. I think that your character balancing for SSF2 would be greatly guided by online multiplayer, as well. I wouldn't be surprised if character changes are being made for v0.8 that may be unwarranted and are prompted by a lack of realizing their current potential. I don't know this of course. But it seems like more work should go into getting online multiplayer running than into character balancing and tier lists, since human to human play should determine the latter.

The problem is, work on online mode is limited to the devs and the most we could do is test it when it comes out. Balancing is still high priority since a game with online will be meaningless with broken and UP characters (not that we haven't fixed most of them).

You have nothing to worry about there. All changes go through the balancers of SSF2 before the demo is put out, and as one of them I assure you this is not the case

So have the balancers been able to test the characters against each other in human-to-human play?

In real life, yes. Online, we're not at liberty to say.

Interesting answer. Sounds promising, although T.testLP already said that online is a long ways away

So hey folks, I'm AdumbroDeus, I'm a current member of the Brawl Back room on smashboards and I also play melee and I was not aware that there was a competitive community till very recently. Naturally I'm interested in getting involved.
I go to stony brook university (I know there is at least one other competitive player in the area) and I have a good amount of experience in MU analysis and in creating and analyzing effective rulesets, plus I have connections that might be useful in helping the community grow.
So, hello.

Hey, I think I am the one you are referring to (we talked on the train). I'm not sure if we are accepting applications at this point (and maybe someone can clarify in a reply), but if we are then you should check out the Application page.

Well I haven't exactly contributed to the community yet, so I doubt I'm ready to be a BR member. I feel like it's just as much commitment as what you can offer, but I'm glad to be at the community's disposal.
Also, yea, that's me. I gave you my number right? Shoot me a text, we should play some time.
Is there any real tournament scene atm?

I don't think so. Send it to me in a PM.AdumbroDeus wrote:

Not officially, but the rules, teir lists and MU's, etc. are made for each version anyway for local PvP and to help develop tournament gameplay in preperation for Online mode (which is still a ways off).AdumbroDeus wrote:

Well for most smash games offline tournaments are generally preferred, depending on how much latency the end product has online tournaments would be viable.
At the same time, it's worth making inroads for offline tournaments, both so a scene can be started prior to the online mode release and in case the latency ends up being too much for offline play to be viable.

We are pretty much always accepting new applications, with the exception of the time period just before a new demo release. Prior contribution is not at all necessary here before applying, and there is in fact very little you can contribute here without being a member because of how little discussion is public. I'd recommend applying as soon as you feel you are qualified, but understand that if you fail the application you will not be able to re-apply until v0.9. Make sure you are prepared in your knowledge of SSF2 when you apply, not just main title smash games.

Well, then I assume for the moment I can function as a reference/connection.
But yes, I can see that this side of the forums doesn't get that much activity.

Well, the only problem with that is the fact that only a few of us are backroomers who live near others, or know them in person. In fact, I would go as far to say that my circle of friends (You, PerfectHell4, AzureLight12 and myself) is the largest group of people who use these forums and are closely connected. Obviously I'd have to introduce you to the others, but even with four of us it would be hard just to spread interest in our area...

The first step is to spread awareness among other smashers that exists and might make a good competitive game.
Seriously, getting it as a side event at a major smash tournament would draw a ton of interest to the game which would in turn draw plenty of recruits, all we'd really need to do is convince a TO to do it and I know a ton that would probably be willing to give it a chance.
If the developer is responsive to the competitive community, from there it should be able to take off relatively quickly.
